Center of Excellence in Clinical Informatics
Clinical informatics also known as health informatics is an amalgamation of the information science, health data, analysis workflows and actionable strategy outcomes for healthcare and patient care. The end goal of clinical informatics is to improve patient care, increase access to healthcare and advance health outcomes. The era of medicine where a single therapeutic regimen was administered to all patients with similar symptoms or disease is coming to an end. Healthcare is increasingly becoming “Personalized” by taking into consideration the patient’s genetic/genomic background, which is being enabled due to implementation of clinical informatics. Clinical informatics is emerging as a significant contributor to deliver advanced and highly specific personalized healthcare services.
Along with the genome, the patient’s environment and lifestyle can also have an impact on health, diseases and treatment outcomes. Thus keeping proper record
of allied patient data from wearable devices such as heart rate, number of steps taken, food intake, quality of sleep etc. all along the life of an individual can generate an exhaustive resource which can help in diagnosis and management of diseases in the individual’s lifetime. Clinical informatics will play a central role in the creation and management of such digital health representation of an individual. These data sources can also be used as an invaluable tool for predicting longevity and improving the quality of life of the individuals by making personalized suggestions for physical activity and change in food habits. Implementation of future P4 medicine will also be immensely aided by the effective implementation of clinical informatics.
